Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway

I don’t have adequate superlatives for the stunning beauty of this park. I went there in March of 2014, and it was past time to go back. I’m so glad I did! The staff are so warm, welcoming and friendly. They are so informative! I missed seeing the buffalo, but they might have been hunkering down near water where it was cooler. The prairie dogs were constantly active and so fun to watch. I camped in Little Red Tent area, and the campsites are on a bluff overlooking the Little Red River. For primitive camping, the most spectacular sites are in the North Prong and South Prong campsites. This is a great park for hiking, which I would like to do when it’s not so hot. There were still a lot of people hiking and even jogging in the park. There’s so much to see and do, it takes longer than the two days I was there. I recommend this park to anyone who loves gorgeous scenery, wildlife, magnificent sunrises, sunsets, great staff, unforgettable camping and hiking experiences.

As a visitor from central Texas, it's wild how the scenery feels like another country out here. So grateful that there were so many beautiful sights available even from the vehicle so folks navigating mobility issues can still take it in. Was here years ago too when the bison were first released and at that time got to experience the incredible trails as well. Not to mention the dark sky status for majestic stargazing and sunsets/sunrises. Enjoy the awe!

Stunning red rock scenery and incredible wildlife. It's very easy to see the bison roaming everywhere, even right by the Visitor Center! I also saw plenty of prairie dogs, deer, and a variety of birds throughout the park. The trails are rugged and beautiful—just be sure to start early to beat the heat. A must-visit for nature lovers!

The canyons are stunning! Beautiful colors and striking landscapes. And if you’ve never seen buffalo, then this park is a must. The herd was up on the plains and not down in the canyons where the majority of the trails are. We saw plenty of buffalo (bison) from the park roads and the safety of our car. We want to come back in the spring or fall to hike, when it’s not 105° out! Don’t get excited about the lake, it’s currently almost completely dried up. Nice visitor center and restrooms.

Great place to camp and hike. Beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife to see. Everyone here was friendly and staff was very helpful. Definitely recommend adding this to you vacation list. Family friendly and dog friendly park. Playground area for kids by Honey Flat campground.
