Clean store, well lit, clean bathrooms, clean tables (not sticky feeling), clean and organized utensils and napkin station. Key word is clean! The kolaches were good, bite sized, and ran $1.69 each. The bottoms were not soggy, bread felt nicely cooked, and jam tasted good (not artificial). It gives bucc-ee’s a run for the money as the value prop to me for bucc-ee’s is a clean bathroom facility and $1.99 iced coffee. The bbq meat sandwiches are immediately satisfying but filled with a laundry list of additive ingredients I can’t pronounce - a guilty pleasure but not for every time I come in. The smaller items tend to be rather overpriced at the house of beaver. It’s nice you can spend a few bucks to get a treat at slovacek. The only down side is iced coffee is around $2.70. I have not tried the brisket or meat handhelds but will try next time I’m driving south. Related note - On the way back north I stopped by a kolache place (late afternoon) across the other side of the I-35 and regretted it - the place looked dingy and VERY dimly lit, sticky tables, and the oversized kolaches were soggy on the bottom, the fruit jam tasted artificial. I tossed all 3 of the kolache in the trash can after 1 bite. For now slovacek feels like a safe alternative to buccees if you don’t want to spend $9 on a meat log and want to sit down and relax for a few minutes to eat rather than risk spilling hot sauce all over your car seats. I did grab the kolaches in the morning; so I can’t speak for slovacek quality midday or late afternoon. Staff was warm and friendly.
